Spiritual Tidbits & Rector’s Reflections for June 2018 from Father Tim
June has arrived and brings the first day of summer. However, as spring comes to a close it seems the hottest days of summer have arrived somewhat early. Schools are out, vacation travel abounds, weddings are being solemnized, and swimming pools open with a splash. The summer months always offer ample opportunity for adventure and fun under the sun of God’s good creation. All the more reason to give thanks each Sunday for God’s bountiful blessings and receive the Holy Mysteries. If we do the math we will discover spending one hour per week (every week) inside God’s Holy Church at worship for our entire average life span only adds up to approximately six months. That’s right, over your entire life if you never missed a Sunday you will end up giving God only six months of your time. Not a real impressive number to show up with on Judgment Day. Pretty paltry actually. And would you like to know the lifetime tithing statistics? Probably not. Okay, I won’t go there for now. Instead we will focus on the time we have remaining! I consider it a blessing to worship with each of you at every opportunity this Summer. Together, as good and holy stewards, let’s use our time, talents, and money (all on loan from God) to make the world we touch a brighter and better place. ~ Father Tim

The Holy Mysteries
An Act of Preparation
O LORD, I am not worthy, neither sufficient that Thou shouldest enter beneath the filthy roof of the house of my soul, seeing it is all desolate and downfallen; and Thou hast not with me a worthy place to lay thy head. But as Thou tookest upon Thee to be laid in a cavern and a cratch of brute beasts: as Thou didst not refuse to be received even in the house of Simon the leper: as Thou didst not repel even the harlot like me, the sinner, coming to Thee and touching Thee: as Thou didst not abhor her filthy mouth and polluted: neither the robber on the cross confessing to Thee: in like sort vouchsafe to accept me too the inveterate, miserable, the singular great sinner, to the touch and partaking of the immaculate, awful, quickening and saving mysteries of thine all holy Body and precious Blood. ~ Lancelot Andrewes, The Preces Privatae

Construction and restoration projects will continue through summer! Soon the roofers will be back with a crane and we will be having the tin roof on the Bell Tower repaired. You may have noticed some windows missing in the bell tower and turret. Those are in the process of being restored. Just recently the plaster work in the Narthex and Nave have been completed. Finally, some of you have already taken advantage of items inside the glass display case in the Parish Hall. We will continue (in a small way) recreating the old St. John Church Book Stall where you will find copies of Christian books, St. John bookmarkers, and other interesting items. Stop by periodically and look for new items!

June Spirituality Class
In June we will be continuing our transitional class with both Spirituality and Bible Study through the summer. The class in June will cover The Wise & Foolish Virgins (Matthew 25). The study of God’s word is central to the life and mission of our parish church of St. John the Evangelist. Please join us after Holy Mass on the 17th of June for an engaging, dynamic, and informative exploration of the Holy Scriptures. All are welcome, but be warned: continued exposure to God’s word will change your life.

Where is the sweet repose of
hearts repenting,
The deep calm sky, the sun-
shine of the soul,
Now heaven and earth are to
our bliss consenting,
And all the Godhead joins
to make us whole?
