Spiritual Tidbits for October from Father Tim

October is the month of the Rosary. Instead of the usual Hail Mary Rosary I personally prefer The Remnant Rosary given to me by my spiritual father (Seraphim +). On the Remnant Rosary you pray for Jesus to help you learn His Life, to pray His Life, to live His Life, and to give His Life. We must fall into His Life in order to be risen up in His Life. The season of Fall tends to remind us the end of the year is drawing near. It also has a way of enticing us to reminisce about the past seasons of our own life, and what amount of seasons we may still have remaining ahead. Have we really lived? The answer is “yes” only if we learn, pray, live, and give the life of Christ. This life draws us to Holy Communion each week to receive the Bread of Life. In the first day of October, 1598 the Caroline Divine Lancelot Andrews stood in the pulpit at St. Giles Cripplegate and delivered a sermon on Isaiah 6:6-7: Then flew one of the seraphims unto me, having a live coal in his hand, which he had taken with the tongs from off the altar: And he laid it upon my mouth, and said, Lo, this hath touched thy lips; and thine iniquity is taken away, and thy sin purged. Andrews began by proclaiming, “In the Liturgy of the ancient Church those words are found applied to the blessed Sacrament of Christ’s body and blood.” Thus his congregation immediately linked the salvific touch of the “live” coal to the immanent Sacrament containing the Real Presence of Christ they were about to receive. Andrews confirmed their connection proclaiming, “our sins are no less taken away by the element of bread and wine, in the Sacrament, than the Prophets sin was by being touched with a coal.” Parishioner frequency of receiving Holy Communion skyrocketed. Behold the purging power of the Life of Christ for the Remnant. A season to remember. ~ Father Tim

Our choice as Christians is not whether we suffer or whether we do not. Our choice is whether, given suffering, it shall be creative or destructive. ~ Robert LLewelyn, A Doorway to Silence

October Spirituality Class

Please join us after Holy Mass on the 15th of October as we continue our discussion on Prayer and our Prayer Life. “Prayer, says Evelyn Underhill, will include many different kinds of spiritual work; and also—what is too often forgotten—the priceless gift of spiritual rest. It will include many kinds of intercourse with Reality—adoration, petition, meditation, contemplation—and all the shades and varieties of these which religious writers have named and classified.” Have you thought about your own prayer life lately? Would you enjoy learning ways to deepen your prayer life? Please come to the class and bring a friend!

A man’s heart must be formed to humanity and benevolence, he must love mercy, otherwise he will not act mercifully in any settled course of behavior. A consideration of the future sanctions of religion is our only security of persevering in our duty, in cases of great temptations; so to get our heart and temper formed to a love and liking of what is good, is absolutely necessary in order to our behaving rightly in the familiar and daily intercourses amongst mankind. ~ Joseph Butler (1692-1752), Bishop of Durham, Sixteen Celebrated Sermons

Psalm-Children

This month the children will begin learning about Holy People of God. On October 1 we will cover Noah, October 8 we will act as holy people by engaging in a service project, October 15 we will cover Moses, October 23 we will cover St. Peter. We will end the month by joining all parishioners for an All Hallow’s Eve/All Saint’s Day Party on October 29. Please feel free to write down or e-mail me with intentions for our Prayer Cross. We invite all children ages 2-12 to join us as we learn through lessons, activities, and fellowship. ~ Mary Matias Akhtar

Emails

Many of you send me emails through the week. It is fine for you to do so, but going forward any emails I receive which contain information that should be discussed face to face will be handled differently. I will read these and then make time (somehow) to meet with you in person. As handy as electronic data is, it remains a mode of communication too easily misconstrued or taken out of context. This is why Jesus did not give parables to His disciples over iPhones or Androids. ~ Father Tim
