Advent begins today and the following are changes in the Mass: The Magnificat or Hymn instead of the Gloria in Excelsis. Also, the Deacon will say, ‘Let us Bless the Lord,’ instead of ‘Depart in Peace’ at dismissal. Proper response is still, ‘Thanks Be to God.’
Today is the fourth and last Sunday in Advent, when the final candle on the Wreath is lit. This then is the ‘Angels Candle’, representing the peace on earth the Lord will bring. The Peace of the Lord be with you all.

Advent Season
The coming of Jesus Christ has brought more joy into the world than any other event. No wonder Christmas is the season of Greatest Joy. Today we begin our preparation for making our Christmas celebration a special event. It is a busy time of the year and we are tempted to say we don’t have time or any room in our inn. This is because we have other things come into our lives that crowd out the space that should be occupied by Our Lord. You may well have gotten a present for everyone on your list, written cards to all our loved ones, not forgotten the shut-ins, prepared for the holiday feasts, decorated the house and yard, and even forgotten to all the special Christmas programs at school and organizations. However, if you have not put Jesus Christ in the center of your life through worship, study, prayer, and stewardship, how could you possibly have celebrated Christmas?
To enrich your Christmas, keep CHRIST in the CENTER of it! Take time to keep a daily devotion to God. Attend church services during Advent and participate in as many of the special functions as you can. A wonderful way of preparing our hearts for the great feast on Christmas is to attend our mid-week Holy Communion service at 6 pm on Wednesdays. Come Join Us!
Unique Features of Advent
During most of the Church’s liturgical year, the altar and its furnishing remain much the same. However, you will notice slight variations during Advent, when the Church bids us to enter into a spirit of preparation through prayer and penance for the coming of Our Lord. Similar changes are observed during Lent when we prepare for His Death and Resurrection.
The frontal is removed from the altar, there are no flowers on the altar, the Gloria is omitted, and violet vestments are worn. Today we bless the Advent Wreath, light the first candle and read the great exhortation, and begin the Church year by recommitting ourselves to do our ‘bounden duty’ as a member of the Church.
